A birthday poem.

grinning, ear-to-ear

ball pit glory magnified

by grandpa’s camera

red wagon rides and

watermelon lady bugs

marking one whole year

begging fruit salad

from party plates, like the dog:

returning again

and again, until

the five little monkeys steal

your interest, jumping

Bounce! Bounce! in your hand

carrot cake caterpillar

crawling on high chair

Smash! Gobble! stuffing

sticky fingers in your face

cream cheese on your chin
